Have you heard of Beaujonomie before? 🤔

The term ‘Beaujonomie’ describes a more casual trend that now defines fine dining and World Wine Synergy is bringing the spirit of ‘Beaujonomie’ to Vancouver with Beaujolais wines. Beaujonomie embraces the idea of good food and wine being complementary and enjoyable but above all accessible—the notion of sharing food and wine with friends while enjoying a lively conversation. The courses that highlighted diverse flavours such as wild mushroom, rosemary and fontina polenta salad, roasted Angus ribeye with creamed kale and Bordelaise sauce, and roasted pork belly were paired with a selection of wines from 9 different Beaujolais villages. Iain Philip introduced the crus that are produced by boutique wineries in Chiroubles, Fleurie, Côte de Brouilly, Saint-Amour and Morgon, using environmentally friendly farming, organic, and biodynamic methods. While for many years Beaujolais was synonymous with Beaujolais Nouveau, more wine-lovers are discovering the excitement of historic Beaujolais and its 12 appellations.

Last week, @World Wine Synergy hosted a unique Lunch & Learn at @harthouserest, during which Iain Philip led us through a study-and-taste of all 12 appellations of Beaujolais (18 wines in total) as well as a rare opportunity to taste the 10 Crus side by side. The crus—produced by boutique producers using environmentally friendly farming, organic, and biodynamic methods—truly allowed the terroir to show its strength and character.

“Even though the region focuses primarily on Gamay,” says Iain Philip, “there is immense diversity in the styles produced. From exuberantly festive Beaujolais Nouveau, through the expressive purity of the Beaujolais-Villages wines, to the exceptional capturing of terroir of the 10 Crus, there is a wine for everyone!”. Could Vancouver be the next city to land on the prestigious RAW WINE fair circuit?

Founded in 2011 to celebrate clean, additive and pesticide-free wines, @rawwineworld—the international celebration of natural, organic and biodynamic low-intervention vino–has in the past included Montreal on a global circuit that also includes fairs in London, New York, L.A. and Berlin, but this year was Toronto’s first. The festival included more than 60 wineries and their Canadian agents pouring hundreds of fizzy, cloudy, orange and funkily fermented wines, along with educational seminars and panels. Famous labels (like Sicily’s Frank Cornelissen and COS, and Domaine Grosbois from France’s Loire) chilled alongside lesser-known natural wines from Georgia, Greece, Chile and Australia.
