Ever wondered what Irish whiskey and Pinot Noir wine from the Okanagan have in common?

Until this week, not much, aside from both being aged in oak barrels. So if you are an oenophile who was wondering how to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, there’s a new wine-cask finished whiskey now available that offers something for everyone (until it’s gone, that is!).

Irish Distillers, the makers of Green Spot Irish Whiskey (as well as Jameson, Redbreast, and more), and West Kelowna-based Quails’ Gate winery recently collaborated for the first time to release Green Spot Quails’ Gate which is a single pot still whiskey finished in pinot noir casks. The beloved Vancouver Island Blue Grouse Estate Wi

The beloved Vancouver Island Blue Grouse Estate Winery and Vineyard is changing ownership.

Blue Grouse is the second winery on the island to be purchased by the Jackson family, who through Jackson Family Wines, own the likes of Kendall Jackson, Matanzas Creek, Cambria and several others.

Paul Brunner and family (wife Christina and daughter Paula, who Blue Grouse Sparkling wine is named after) purchased Blue Grouse (vineyard established in 1989) from the founding Kiltz family in 2012. Over the past decade, they nurtured the estate into one of the region’s flagship producers. The affable Brunner—who adopted as his moniker “the Blue Grouch”—says his family was united in feeling the winery had grown to a point where it required more time, effort and energy than they could commit.

Did you know that tomorrow is International Syrah Day?

And if you thought that international meant that you can't celebrate with a glass of local #syrahwine, @goodwinegal is here to prove you wrong.

While Syrah might be overshadowed by Bordeaux varieties with only 553 acres planted, it may be B.C.’s best-kept wine secret. Stylistically, old-world Syrah’s signature is pepper spice. Here in B.C., white pepper shows its cool climate connection to Cote Rotie or Cornas in the Northern Rhone—Syrah’s origin. Black pepper and chocolate are more common deep in the south Okanagan where heat ripens similar to Shiraz from Australia.

With Syrah Day on February 16th, it’s time to expose Syrah as a stylistic chameleon. Whether lean or rich, organic, sustainable or vegan, sparkling to still, with rosé in between, styles of Syrah are plentiful. Head over to the link in our bio to explore the local #bcwine expressions of Syrah.
